The Tacoma received a full redesign for 2024, including several off-road-focused trim levels and serious adventure hardware. It’s available in a new two-door extended cab called XtraCab and four-door crew cab with five- or six-foot beds.
1. Tacoma TRD Pro
The Tacoma is one of the best midsize pickup trucks on the market. And in 2024, this workhorse gets a hard reset with expanded capability, new tech, and fresh design. And thanks to the TNGA-F platform, it can perform better than ever before.
The 2024 Tacoma TRD Pro is a serious off-road machine. It’s equipped with specialized FOX shocks, an ARB steel rear bumper, recovery hooks, and more rugged elements to enhance the experience of driving off the beaten path. Plus, it offers the thrilling i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain that pairs efficiency and performance in one.
Toyota has reimagined the interior of this truck as well. It comes standard with a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment display that features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. It also has a spacious 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster that is customizable for the driver’s liking. And the segment-first IsoDynamic Performance Seats help keep the ride comfortable and composed when you’re tackling tough terrain.
The Tacoma’s suspension has been upgraded for 2024. This truck now features a multi-link coil rear system, and higher trims get a brand-new Adaptive Variable Suspension that switches damping instantly based on road conditions. In addition, the highest trims now come with a front stabilizer bar disconnect technology to improve suspension articulation. 2. Tundra TRD Pro
For those who need a full-size pickup for hauling and towing, the Tundra is still a solid choice. Its latest generation is a bit longer than the previous model, but it also benefits from a more powerful engine and a more spacious cabin.
Toyota’s flagship full-size pickup gets a major overhaul for 2024. A new V-6 hybrid powertrain makes this already capable truck more fuel-efficient, while a range of new TRD Pro options make it even better at off-roading.
The TRD Pro takes its cues from the F-150 Raptor, with a Fox suspension setup and traits unique to this Toyota variant like higher ground clearance. But it also packs a big punch, thanks to the i-Force Max hybrid powertrain that pairs the gutsy turbocharged V-6 with an electric motor sandwiched between the flywheel and torque converter. The combination produces 437 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque, enough to propel the Tundra to 60 mph in just under six seconds, according to MotorTrend’s testing.
For those who want more serious off-roading capability, Toyota offers a trailhunter trim that adds Old Man Emu by ARB shocks and hot-stamped steel skid plates to the front differential and transmission. There’s also a PreRunner edition that’s designed to be more Baja-style, with unique features such as an onboard air compressor and frame-mounted rock rails.
3. Tundra TRD Off-Road
As its name suggests, the TRD Off-Road offers a lot of off-road capability for your money. A push-button rear differential lock lets you hone in on muddy, rocky, or snowy terrain, while Multi-Terrain Select and Crawl Control let you tackle whatever the trail throws at you. The TRD Off-Road’s suspension is also improved, thanks to Bilstein remote reservoir shocks with long-overdue improvements that make it easier to handle the high-speed bumps and dives of off-road driving.
A TRD-specific front anti-roll bar and new bushings let you take the Tundra TRD Off-Road on even more technical trails, and the truck’s oversized Michelin tires deliver plenty of grip. Toyota also makes its interiors more comfortable by adding aluminum sport pedals, a TRD engine start/stop button, and a leather-wrapped shift lever, as well as upgraded SofTex seats with 8-way power-adjustment and 2-way power lumbar.
On the road, the Tundra TRD Pro is surprisingly composed and stable, especially with its stouter powertrain. Its 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 hybrid system cranks out 437 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque, which is more than any half-ton pickup this side of a Hellcat-powered Ram TRX. On the rocky terrain we tested it on, the Tundra TRD Pro’s powertrain accelerated quickly and easily, and it stayed calm when negotiating tight corners or steep slopes.

4. Tundra Limited
The 2024 Tundra has a lot to offer truck buyers. Its refreshed design looks more modern, and it offers an array of powertrain options including a hybrid model. Toyota also makes a Trailhunter version that aims to appeal to overlanders.
The Tundra Limited is the flagship trim level of this truck. It’s a more luxurious option that includes a rearview camera, a bedliner, and Bluetooth connectivity for your smartphone. It also has a more spacious cabin and a larger infotainment touchscreen compared to the SR.
Even though this is the most expensive trim, it’s still a bargain compared to some of the full-size competitors out there. It’s not as refined as a Ford F-150 or Chevy Silverado, but it still holds its own in terms of comfort and features. For example, it’s easy to drive off-road, and the Bilstein shocks do a great job of soaking up the bumps and ruts.
In terms of pure performance, the Tundra isn’t class-leading in towing or payload ratings. However, it’s a competent and capable truck that can handle almost anything you throw at it.
